I fucking love Helter Skelter, so i decided to make a review (kind of?) of the manga because why not.
Helter Skelter is a 90s manga that was written and illustraded by the feminist mangaka Kyoko Okazaki. It is a psychological horror story and it centers around Lilico, a famous japanese model who undergos multiple plastic surgeries to ''perfect'' her body. She slowly starts losing her mind because her body starts getting worse and worse after every surgery. Lilico looks for every product, every medication and possible surgery to mantain her beauty, because that is what makes her ''valuable''.
What i personally love about this manga is that its characters arent made to be likable, but they still can capture what it is like to be a woman or an AFAB person too. How Lilico is taught that her only value is in her physical attractiviness, in her looking young and sexy, shes not alowed to just be. It also really gets me on how we are taught that we need to buy and buy and buy and consume and consume a wild variety of beauty products, we need to use all these products till we dont even look human, at all.
It is also quite awesome that even tho Helter Skelter is a 90s manga, it is still relevant nowadays and has many topics that are important to be looked at. Even with modern day feminism (or liberal feminism) which tell us that self care is consuming, self care is making us look appealing but you do all this FOR YOURSELF. also user @mclennonyaoi has a interesting post about this. so yeah, i definetely reccomend reading Helter Skelter, of course search about the trigger warnings first, but i think it is a very important read. ( that manga also reminds me of the song artificial by x-ray spex, which is a great band btw)

Comic Books
Comic book roundup! that is to say, books about making comics. Though I'm always taking recs for actual comic books. So far this year, I've chewed through -
Framed Ink - Marcos Mateu-Mestre (my favourite!)
Understanding Comics - Scot McCloud
Making Comics - Scot McCloud
Theory of Comics and Sequential Art - Will Eisner
Framed Perspective - Marcos Mateu-Mestre (still working through this and will be until the sun explodes)
Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering - Nate Piekos
And not directly comic related but useful enough that I'm counting it
Anatomy for Artists- Tom Fox (highly recommend)
Morpho Life Drawing books, but especially Fat & Skin Folds
This has paid off in my sequential art! 2023 -> 2024
But I feel like I'm butting up against my limits again. I've become pretty good at discerning if this is a mindset problem, or a skill gap, and this one feels like a skill gap. I don't have as strong a grasp of composition as I'd like, in that my successes feel like flukes and are inconsistent. My anatomy needs tuning up also, but i can kind of fuzz that with solid comp, and I can only do one thing at a time. With that in mind, to read and do:
How to Draw Noir Comics: The Art and Technique of Visual Storytelling - Shawn Martinbrough
Framed Ink 2 - Marcos Mateu-Mestre
Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative - Will Eisner
Picking stills from movies I like and doing thumbnails
Watching more movies/reading comic books, and getting into the habit of breaking down pages in an art program
All in all, pretty happy! And I have an excuse to read comic books. Win win
#text post#thank u art instruction books for my life#i've read more manga which rules but isn't super the style i want to draw in#(if you're curious my favourite is helter skelter)#but i'm looking forward to reading more comics#radroche i hear you say i thought this was the year of perspective. and it is. but that's more on the direct study side#always taking recs!

HS: If you are aware of fashion in Japan, you must have seen Liliko's face. For the last few years, she has been at the top of the modeling world, with her face and body promoting the biggest brands. But as everyone who is in this world admits, staying on top is a constant and never ending battle. There are always new faces introduced to the public. Younger models and new looks are brought into the fold every season. And keeping that position means learning to adapt and learning to cope with change.
To maintain her position Liliko has decided to go under the knife. This is not her first go with this service. It is yet another round of plastic surgery, all done to keep herself looking young and vibrant. However, in this case just a little nip and tuck was not enough. Liliko is bent on undergoing a full body makeover. From head-to-toe, every inch of her will undergo cosmetic surgery, and thus begins her madness.
Hikaru: Two boys lived in a village: Yoshiki and Hikaru. The two did everything together...until the day Hikaru was encompassed by a mysterious light. That was when everything changed—Hikaru most of all. Yoshiki still wishes from the bottom of his heart to always stay by his side...but is there even a Hikaru left to be with?
